PRESS RELEASE

MUTEK SOLUTIONS ENHANCES BUGTRAPPER(TM), ADDS VISUAL BASIC SUPPORT WITH RELEASE 3.0

Traditional debuggers require reproducing the problem, BugTrapper doesn't.

For print and on-line release: February 12, 2000

At the VBITS Conference, San Francisco CA - 12 February 2000 - MuTek Solutions Limited, a leading provider of tools that accelerate software development today announced Release 3.0 of BugTrapper. Release 3.0 adds robust support for Visual Basic and key user-requested capabilities which improve BugTrapper's functionality for debugging large, mission-critical programs.

Key Benefits

The key benefit of BugTrapper is that users are not required to perform any modifications to their application. Users of traditional debuggers must add numerous API calls to software source code in order to perform traces, dump the stack, and most importantly, to be able to reproduce offending crashes.

With BugTrapper, developers, testers and remote support personnel can trap bugs without having to reproduce them. Similar to a "black box" aircraft flight recorder, BugTrapper traps bugs by generating a trace of how and where bugs occurred, providing a direct path back to the cause of the problem behavior. BugTrapper's new paradigm for debugging makes it the first in a new class of tools, called tracers, which compliment traditional software debugging tools.

Added Support for Visual BASIC

According to Schlomo Wgodny, VP of North American Operations, BugTrapper's rapid acceptance by C and C++ programmers led to numerous requests for Visual Basic (VB) support. Says Wgodny "V3.0 adds features tuned directly to VB users' needs. It utilizes the terms VB programmers expect to see. From a data point of view it includes trace tree properties of clusters and allows users to see during tracing the properties of objects such as Visual Basic forms and events. These are extremely important to developers who are analyzing problems. In addition, BugTrapper 3.0 retains the I-NET links that enable developers to remotely trace problems on user machines over TCP/IP connections.

Release 3.0 adds features pointed at large system developers. "Feedback from our customer base indicated BugTrapper would be even more useful for debugging large, mission-critical type applications if we added certain new types of triggers and actions. These mechanisms allow users to specify actions to be taken when various conditions occur during tracing. For example, when calling a function, or when an exception occurs, BugTrapper triggers can specify actions like start trace, dump trace to file, perform a stack dump, or stop tracing, all without exiting the problem itself. Other actions available include switching from function to line tracing. This gives users on-demand tracing."

Continues Wgodny "Our users report this type of capability is critically important when tackling problems buried deep within large, server-based, mission-critical type programs; i.e. database servers. Typically these programs perform a lot of internal processing without a great deal of user interaction, Even if there's a serious problem, the program usually doesn't crash. Without conditional tracing it can be hard to capture or recognize the point of failure because the user is being swamped with data."

RTF Output
Another feature added in Release 3.0 is the ability for users to export an RTF formatted version of BugTrapper trace files in order to perform their own, customized analyses. Potential applications include analyses of race conditions, security analysis, and QA usage to document code coverage.

In the past year, BugTrapper has received wide acceptance among software developers including Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard, 3COM, Mercury Interactive, Siemens and Ericsson.

Price and Availability
BugTrapper I-NET is available immediately from MuTek Solutions. It is priced for each customer depending upon the modules and features they require for their application, which ranges from $495 to $4,395. BugTrapper and BugTrapper I-NET support programs compiled by Microsoft Visual Studio™ development system version 4.1 and higher, and runs on Windows 95, Windows 98™, and Windows NT™ operating systems version 4.0 and higher, including Windows 2000.
